Google Earth as a Virtual World
Heard an interesting rumor today from an academic who heard through the PhD grapevine...Google is working on turning Google Earth into a virtual world a la SecondLife (full disclosure: Benchmark investment) . That would be an interesting development both for Google. After hearing this, I was struck by the language on the Google Earth website: "One more step to creating a life-like 3-D model of the whole planet.."

I doubt it will be "like" Second Life any more than World of Warcraft is. Just the fact that it's bound to the planet earth removes many aspects - land ownership, shared spaces, etc.
More likely they'll drop avatars in and make peoples' content more readily searchable.
IBM is doing it and I heard similar about Microsoft and their Virtual Earth which, frankly, I'd rather see ... their 3D content is far better than Google's. And they would likely integrate a Virtual Earth/SecondLife with other Microsoft products like Outlook, Calendar and Instant Messaging. Imagine making an appt. with someone in a Virtual World and having your Outlook Calendar updated and a map of the Virtual Meeting place included.
