Michael Jackson Killed the Iranian Revolution

For over a week the people of Iran captured the imagination of the world, tweeting, youtube-ing and texting their way to international support.  Despite the best efforts of the Mullahs, Ayatolla Khameni and "President" Ahmandinejad, who cut the internet lines and jammed cell phone, the green people revolution marched on.  The Iranian oppressors were on the run, or so it seemed, even though western leaders such as President Obama, did little to support the Iranian people. Civilians around the world set up proxy servers, retweeted information from Iran, and spread YouTube videos of Neda and others. in fact #iranelection and other variants of it, occupied the top 3-4 spots in the Twitter top 10 for over a week.

That was, until Michael Jackson died. The 50 year old Pedophile, with the plastic face and unauthentic hair knocked the real people of Iran off the top 4 spots on twitter within hours of his death. Instead of retweeting the heroism of the people of Iran, they were speculating on the reasons for Jackson's "untimely" death. His death propelled his songs to the top of the download charts and and moved Neda's death down the charts. The Pedophile overtook the student revolution and the world's attention to the events in Iran waned. 1.6 million people signed up for the Michael Jackson memorial at the Staples Center tomorrow but only a small fraction of that number turned up to support rallies for the Iranian people.  The contrast and the irony is too great. Even today, Michael Jackson is in spot #4 and #iranelection is number 8. The people of the world have lost interest in Iran and Jackson continues to grab headlines.

We have a problem. If our attention and that of the news media can be swayed from earth shattering events and real people, fighting real oppression with the ease that Michael Jackson swayed it, we have a problem. If we are riveted by a miscreant pedophile, who lived extravagantly and ran away from reality, then we have lost our moral compass. Twitter is a pretty accurate reflection of what people are thinking and CNN is a reflection of what media people are thinking. Jackson is ahead of Iran on Twitter and the top story on CNN today was Jackson's memorial. We have a problem.

Totally agree except for the part about it somehow being Michael Jackson's fault. The fundamental problem, in my view, is that news (in the US at least) is subject to the profit motive (why would a company report news if they don't profit?). MJ's death sells...some kids getting killed in Iran? Not so much. Don't get me wrong, I'm as capitalist as the next guy it's just that some things like water, military, news, etc. ought to be public services.

Eisenberg, would you please cut the crap? Michael Jackson didn't kill anybody as your article title is claiming. You talk about Iranian revolution as if you were a freedom fighter. Concretely what did you do for the Iranian revolution? Posting a tweet from your air conditioned office in Herzelia while sipping an espresso? Your righteous attitude is a joke, and the funniest thing is that you are taking yourself so seriously.

Actually he was proven to not be a pedophile.

I don't think there is much of a problem with the focus of people's thoughts shifting to the thing to which they feel more connected. Seems like a natural human tendency to me.

As others already commented Michael Jackson was proven in court not to be a pedophile. You can question his lifestyle, however we can question anybodies lifestyle for that matter.

The truth is that we have seen this kind of phenomenons happen all the time. Same happened during several large events such as the Tjetjen resistance, Uprising in Georgia, Yugoslavia, etc.

It is an information age in which new information is more interesting. We need to be shocked and awed to contribute. And it is sorry to conclude that Iran isn't new anymore. However that doesn't allow anybody to put the blame on one individual, put the blame on our current society. Our lack of interest in ideals and more on profit. Consider this your lose and maybe you will gain something out of it.

Well Michael, you certainly seem to have hit a nerve with the Jacko Wacko's. For the record, Jacko was never "proven" not have been a pedophile, rather his case was never brought to trial after his accuser refused to testify. Of course, it was pure coincidence that Jacko had paid the accuser's family $22 million in the days prior to his accuser's decision not to cooperate. Nothing to see here folks, move along....

most people below got my point about the media and people's attention span and focus. Having spend the last week in the USA, i still cannot get over how much media attention was focused on him. Jackson was clearly a talented person but I still think we need to get perspective on what is meaningful and important.

i will ignore the ad hominem personal attacks below but leave them in the comment stream for the sake of openness. I encourage people to debate the issues.

Michael,

I think you blew it this time.

Your point about people's shift of attention from one important subject to one allegedly less important is well taken. Same for what seems to have been one big circus about a person whom - let's face it - haven't even contributed much music to the world in the last 10 years. (and instead contributed all sort of scandals - from which he was exonerated later on)

I think the problem is in your choice of words. I know you were trying to make a point by using a name-calling phrase, but it came out in bad taste. It's a dead person we're talking about, after all, and I think most people think his only sin was being a total wacko. This does not justify calling him "50 year old Pedophile, with the plastic face and unauthentic hair". I realize you were joking, and still...

Love your blog otherwise.

Do not judge a person until you have walked a thousand miles in their shoes. Jesus said, "Let the person who is without sin, cast the first stone." Michael Jackson started wearing "plastic hair" after his 2nd & 3rd degree burns on his scalp from the Pepsi commercial fire. His father was verbally abusive towards him in regards to his appearance and he changed his appearance to be accepted. Many people have scars from their childhood. His were more visable than most. In regards to some of MJs 'wacko' traits, he protected himself from the sun with an umbrella, wore a glove on the hand he greeted people, and covered his face because of his auto-immune disease Lupus. The police did not find one shred of evidence to confirm the pedophile claim from the photos taken of his private areas to their numerous interviews with household staff. In 2005, 9MacCauley) Culkin took the stand in the pop star's molestation trial where he testified that the singer never molested him as a child, calling the allegations "absolutely ridiculous." If something did happen, the judgment will be between MJ and his maker.

Michael Jackson rates #1 in the Guiness book of world records for charity contributions. He was an extremely gifted musician, dancer, and artist. His music and his concern for people united many races and he broke down many racial barriers. Iran will go on. Michael Jackson is gone.
